Chapter Fourteen
âMailâs in.â
Karla dropped a pile of envelopes on Dannyâs desk with a thud, then went over to her own desk, spinning around in her seat to face Danny.
âAnything interesting?â she asked.
Danny was sorting through the envelopes. Bills, junk mail, nothing much. Until she came across a cream colored envelope that felt heavy and luxurious.
âOnly this,â she said, slitting the envelope open with a kitchen knife that was half buried amongst the detritus of her desk.
The envelope contained a thin strip of paper, and when she pulled it out, her heart skipped a beat. Either because of the amount of the check, or because of Lenaâs signature, she wasnât sure.
âWhat?â asked Karla. âWhat is it?â
âA check,â Danny said, almost choking on the words her mouth was so dry. âFrom Lena.â She glanced down at it again and saw the note jotted on the reminder line. âFor monthly sponsorship.â
âYee-haw!â Karla said. âFood and electricity and heat, I love those things.â
Danny gave a half smile and slid the check under her keyboard. Sheâd honestly wondered if it was going to arrive or not. It was the first of the month, as she and Lena had agreed. But then Lena hadnât made an appearance at the shelter the day before, and hadnât showed up again this morning either. Or called. Or made any other attempt to make contact at all.
âHeat?â she said. âAt the beginning of September? You sure about that?â
Karla shrugged. âAC then,â she said. âNot having to worry about the basics is a weight off my shoulders, and Iâm assuming off yours too.â Then she frowned. âWhere is Lena though?â
Danny had been dreading the moment when Karla noticed that Lena wasnât coming to the shelter. She swallowed, then shrugged. âBusy, I guess.â
âI suppose. Actually, I saw people next door yesterday, workers by the looks of it. Guess sheâs starting building some time soon.â
Maybe that was it. Maybe she was just so busy with the house construction that she didnât have time for niceties. Or phone calls. But Danny knew that wasnât true. Knew that there was something more. Something about that morning when sheâd seen the scars, something that Lena didnât want to talk about. And she wondered if sheâd screwed things up for good, or if she was just supposed to be patient. And she hated herself for not knowing, for not being better at connections, at people. Then the phone rang.
âBowling, rock climbing, or karaoke?â
It took a half second of confusion before Danny realized that it was Julia on the other end of the phone.
âHuh?â
âBowling, rock climbing, or karaoke?â repeated Julia. âThose are your choices, and weâre talking tonight at seven, so youâd better decide fast. Which is it to be?â
Julia. Just the person she needed. Julia would know what to do, Julia was a fount of knowledge when it came to relationships. And she wouldnât judge.
âUm, bowling.â
âBowling it is,â Julia said. âIâll see you there at seven.â
The phone buzzed as she hung up and Danny put the handset down with a sigh.
