Chapter Fourteen

“Mail’s in.”

Karla dropped a pile of envelopes on Danny’s desk with a thud, then went over to her own desk, spinning around in her seat to face Danny.

“Anything interesting?” she asked.

Danny was sorting through the envelopes. Bills, junk mail, nothing much. Until she came across a cream colored envelope that felt heavy and luxurious.

“Only this,” she said, slitting the envelope open with a kitchen knife that was half buried amongst the detritus of her desk.

The envelope contained a thin strip of paper, and when she pulled it out, her heart skipped a beat. Either because of the amount of the check, or because of Lena’s signature, she wasn’t sure.

“What?” asked Karla. “What is it?”

“A check,” Danny said, almost choking on the words her mouth was so dry. “From Lena.” She glanced down at it again and saw the note jotted on the reminder line. “For monthly sponsorship.”

“Yee-haw!” Karla said. “Food and electricity and heat, I love those things.”

Danny gave a half smile and slid the check under her keyboard. She’d honestly wondered if it was going to arrive or not. It was the first of the month, as she and Lena had agreed. But then Lena hadn’t made an appearance at the shelter the day before, and hadn’t showed up again this morning either. Or called. Or made any other attempt to make contact at all.

“Heat?” she said. “At the beginning of September? You sure about that?”

Karla shrugged. “AC then,” she said. “Not having to worry about the basics is a weight off my shoulders, and I’m assuming off yours too.” Then she frowned. “Where is Lena though?”

Danny had been dreading the moment when Karla noticed that Lena wasn’t coming to the shelter. She swallowed, then shrugged. “Busy, I guess.”

“I suppose. Actually, I saw people next door yesterday, workers by the looks of it. Guess she’s starting building some time soon.”

Maybe that was it. Maybe she was just so busy with the house construction that she didn’t have time for niceties. Or phone calls. But Danny knew that wasn’t true. Knew that there was something more. Something about that morning when she’d seen the scars, something that Lena didn’t want to talk about. And she wondered if she’d screwed things up for good, or if she was just supposed to be patient. And she hated herself for not knowing, for not being better at connections, at people. Then the phone rang.

“Bowling, rock climbing, or karaoke?”

It took a half second of confusion before Danny realized that it was Julia on the other end of the phone.

“Huh?”

“Bowling, rock climbing, or karaoke?” repeated Julia. “Those are your choices, and we’re talking tonight at seven, so you’d better decide fast. Which is it to be?”

Julia. Just the person she needed. Julia would know what to do, Julia was a fount of knowledge when it came to relationships. And she wouldn’t judge.

“Um, bowling.”

“Bowling it is,” Julia said. “I’ll see you there at seven.”

The phone buzzed as she hung up and Danny put the handset down with a sigh.
